Berry Picking and Farm Charm at Butternut Farm in Farmington, NH

Change of Plans

Sometimes plans don’t go as intended. A few weeks ago, the boy and I set off to meet some friends. About halfway to our destination, I get a call saying the place is closed due to the extreme heat index.

It’s sweltering that day, but we decide that loading the kids into the car in this heat will not be for nothing. So, we pivot. Living in New Hampshire means there are always alternative options, and where we end up turns out to be one of my favorite discoveries of the summer

A New Destination

My friend suggests we head to Butternut Farm in Farmington, NH, located in Strafford County, for some berry picking. From the moment we arrive, I fall in love. The rolling farmland, the well-kept grounds, and even the tidy goat and peacock pens make the farm both impressive and charming.

They seem to have everything, though it’s obviously not the right season for every crop. We spot peaches, strawberries, blueberries, and apples. The whole place feels like a blend of beauty, variety, and small town warmth.

Meeting Teddy the Farm Dog

One of our favorite parts of the visit is meeting Teddy, the farm dog. He’s an energetic corgi, and I have to admit, I didn’t realize corgis were known for farm work and herding. Teddy trots around like he owns the place, clearly adored by visitors and staff alike..

The kids are thrilled, following him from field to field, while he casually supervises his domain. His personality adds an extra touch of charm to the already wonderful atmosphere. I can see how he’s become part of the farm’s identity.

A Reason to Return

It’s still unbearably hot, and with a group of rambunctious youngsters in tow, I don’t get to explore the farm as thoroughly as I would like. Still, the visit is enough to spark my excitement for a return trip. I’m already planning to come back during apple season.

If you’ve never made the trip, it’s 100% worth it. Butternut Farm offers a genuine slice of New Hampshire charm, and I can’t wait to see it in the crisp, colorful days of autumn.
